Recommended Training

The Grisha Stewart Academy is an excellent resource for all of your training needs. She was recommended to us by our very own Fernando Silva, world-renowned master trainer from Portugal, who has worked with BDT and who is responsible for bringing force-free training to Portugal. Owners who have viewed the videos have nothing but praise. If you want to start slowly, there are two lessons that I highly recommend, even before bringing your puppy home: These are “The Wolf in Your Living Room” and “Empowered Puppy Raising”. Disclaimer: the club gets 10% of the profits from these videos, but we wouldn’t recommend them unless we believed in them.

COST: The cost for one course varies; however, the cost for the “Empowered Puppy Raising” course is $99.00. If, however, you enroll as a Diamond Member ALL ACCESS CLASS, for $39.00 per month, you have access to ALL of her courses. And this is MUCH less expensive than typical training. Of course, we also recommend becoming an AKC Star Puppy and receiving a title for your dog, but becoming your own certified trainer through Grisha Stewart’s gives you a life-time of training! You can cancel any time if it does not suit your needs, but we HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AND START EARLY TO AVOIDE ISSUES.

The book Don’t Shoot the Dog is an excellent resource for new dog owners because it provides practical and effective methods for training dogs using positive reinforcement techniques. The author, Karen Pryor, explains how to use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, to encourage desired behaviors and discourage unwanted behaviors. This approach is based on the principles of operant conditioning, which states that behavior is influenced by its consequences. Pryor provides step-by-step instructions for training a variety of behaviors, from basic commands like sit and stay to more complex behaviors like walking on a leash and coming when called. The book also includes tips on how to prevent and address common problem behaviors, such as barking, chewing, and jumping.

Here are some of the key takeaways from “Don’t Shoot the Dog”:

Training should be fun for both you and your dog.

Positive reinforcement is a more effective training method than punishment.

Dogs learn by association, so it’s important to be consistent with your training.

Timing is critical when it comes to positive reinforcement.

Rewards should be meaningful to your dog.
