About Us

Dana Simel and Gerry Royston and our home and kennel in the Washington D.C. area.

I was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. I have lived, studied and worked in Boston, Chapel Hill, Germany, Ohio, Indiana, and California.

Gerry was born in Britain and moved to Washington, DC, as a child. Gerry retired from the United States Department of Agriculture. We live on eight acres in the country in a house that was originally built in 1865.

Between us, we have three grown children, three cats, chickens, fish in our pond, and three Barbado da Terceiras. We have always had dogs. Prior to our Barbados, Gerry had a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Great Pyreneese. I had a Golden Retreiver and two Black and Tan Coonhounds. Together we raised two Spinone Italiano.

We traveled to the island of Terceira, in the Azore Islands, in the summer of 2018, where we first heard of and met our first Barbado da Terceira. We had the pleasure of visiting with Roberto Cota, the President of the Azorean Association of Breeders of the Barbados Dogs of Terceira Island, his family, rescue dogs, and show dogs. We also visited with our new friends, Armando Silva, his lovely wife, and their many Barbados. The inevitable result? We brought home our first girl, Pico, from Roberto’s kennel. Back on the mainland of Portugal, we had the pleasure of visiting the ranch of Patricia and João O. Sousa of Monte de Magos Kennel, their two lovely boys, and their Maine Coon and herd of cattle, just outside of Lisbon. We also visited Jorge Teixeira, past president of the Clube Português do Barbado da Terceira.

We were so smitten with Pico that when Patricia Sousa told us that she had a male puppy available, it was a no-brainer that I traveled back to Lisbon in October, 2018, to pick up our family member, Rubin.

We created our kennel in 2019. Pico and Rubin have had two litters, one in 2020 and one in 2021. Pico is a wonderful mom!
