Our commitment
The Barbado da Terceira is at risk of extinction and we are committed to its survival. We prioritize the well-being of our dogs by conducting Penn/Hip tests, heart, elbow, and DNA genetic testing before breeding. Our puppies enjoy a fun and enriching environment with a specially designed jungle gym. This helps them develop their coordination and confidence. We understand the importance of early socialization for puppies and put significant effort into providing a well-rounded socialization experience. In 2018, we brought our first Barbado da Terceira from Portugal. We did not intend to become breeders, but our love for Pico cemented our desire to enhance the breed.

About Us
I (Dana Simel) was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina and have lived, studied and worked in Boston, Chapel Hill, Germany, Ohio, Indiana, and California. Gerry Royston was born in Britain and moved to Washington, DC as a child. Gerry retired from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Meeting our First Barbado da Terceira
During our vacation in the Azore Islands in the summer of 2018, we discovered the breed and met Roberto Cota, the President of the Azorean Association of Breeders of the Barbados Dogs of Terceira Island. We also visited breeders Armando Silva, Jorge Texeira, past President of the Clube Português Barbado da Terceira, and Patricia and João Sousa of Monte de Magos Kennel. The inevitable result? Pico of Casa dos Bravos, from Roberto Cota, flew on her first transatlantic flight.

One becomes two
We were so smitten with Pico that when Patricia Sousa told us of an available male puppy, it was a no-brainer that I would travel back to Lisbon in October 2018 to pick up our new family member, Rubin do Monte de Magos.

And two becomes three
In December 2021, my son, Raffi, and I traveled to Monte de Magos in Portugal to pick up Lisbon (“Lizzie”) do Monte de Magos, our third BDT. Lizzie was my birthday present from Gerry, and I had to promise that three dogs is our limit.
